Edith Macefield, (1921-2008), was a stubborn woman. She turned down one million dollars from land developers to live out her days in this house.
When developers bought up all the land around Edith Macefield's tiny two-bedroom, two story house to build trendy condos and restaurants in the old blue collar neighborhood, she held her ground and wouldn't sell for any price.
Born in Oregon, Edith served in World War II, had a son who died of meningitis when he was 13 years old, and adored animals. She could be seen almost every day standing outside her front yard tossing out seeds for the birds. Her collection of glass animals is still lined up on the windowsills. Edith never did sell, and the developers built steep cold walls all around the little old lady.
Edith died at home. She was 86.
